Birdies and the Bump

This Week Was HOT.
No kidding, this week was insanely warm. I’m talking 30+ degree heat, and for the UK that is HOT, and while most people were heading for the shade, I still managed to play three lots of 9 holes. 😂

There was absolutely no way I was playing 18 in that weather though. You’ve got to
be sensible and kind to yourself, especially when you’re pregnant. After a full day of work, the idea of playing golf for four hours in the blazing sun just didn’t appeal. But 9 holes? Manageable. As long as you’ve got plenty of water, some shade between shots, and a slower pace (but not too slow😉), it can actually feel quite therapeutic. Also, don't judge, I did crop my top and get the casper white belly out because I was that warm.
Now that I’m 15 weeks pregnant, everything is starting to shift, literally and mentally. This week was the first time my bump really made an appearance. I’m not going to lie, it’s a bit of a milestone moment. It feels surreal, but also kind of magical. I’m finally starting to look pregnant, which means I’ve also started to feel more pregnant too. People have started asking when I’m going to stop golf. Silly question really, there’s no stopping me, especially the way I’m playing right now!
I’m incredibly lucky that my club runs 9-hole qualifiers. When I saw there was a 9-hole stableford comp on Saturday, and that the weather was going to be a scorcher, it was a no-brainer. The alternative was an 18-hole medal. Nope. Not in this heat, not with this backache, and not with a bump that’s clearly making its presence known!
The course is in such weird condition at the moment, super dry, rock-hard fairways, and balls that bounce and roll in wild directions. Not to mention how hard it is to see your ball when the grass is so scorched. But you adapt. It’s all about being smart and kind to yourself. Adjust expectations, play with your head, and don’t try to be a hero.

I played really well in the qualifier, surprised myself really. Relaxing, managing my game, thinking my way around the course, paid off. I shot a gross 33 (1 under) and scored 20 points. It was a reminder that your body might be changing, but that doesn’t mean your game disappears. In fact, sometimes slowing down can give you better focus.
And… my handicap is now the lowest it’s ever been: WHI 3.5!
The body is honestly amazing. I'm growing a human, swinging a golf club, and still competing, doing well and enjoying it. That said, I’d be lying if I said it’s all easy. The lower back pain has been annoying in this week. Even with stretching and warming up, it’s been tough. I’m not rushing into painkillers yet, but I’ll definitely be having a chat with my midwife or doctor about what’s safe if it doesn’t ease up.
So here’s to playing smart, staying cool, and celebrating the small wins, on and off the course.
Stay tuned for next week as I have some really exciting news to share with you all!
